What started as a methodical football game ended with some explosive plays in a shootout between the Texas Tech Red Raiders and South Florida Bulls.

The first half of the 2017 Birmingham Bowl was a slow-burn, with both teams trading field goals, then touchdowns. The low early score, plus a dearth of big offensive plays, left the announcers stunned; they expected a shootout from the get-go. That shootout would happen, but not until the second half.

In the last two quarters of the game, a combined 52 points hit the scoreboard. The game came down to the last minute, when USF notched a touchdown to pull ahead of Texas Tech, 38-34. The Red Raiders would get the ball back with under 15 seconds left, but would fail to capitalize on that final possession.

Following a rough first half, USF quarterback Quinton Flowers not only hit big throws, but proved an unstoppable running force, with several double-digit scrambles to keep the team's drives going.

With the 38-34 win, South Florida ends its season 10-2, and Texas Tech wraps up a contentious 2017 season at 6-7.
