5 Things to Do in Lubbock This Weekend (October 7-9)

Tonight, Maggie Trejo Supercenter will host their 21st Annual Halloween Carnival. The event will be from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. Youth of all ages can dress up in their costumes and enjoy food, carnival games, crafts, face painting and door prizes. Kids will enjoy games and activities at over twenty booths! Admission for the carnival is two cans of food or $1 per child. All canned items will benefit the South Plains Food Bank. A Farmers Market and pumpkin carving contest will be held Saturday morning at the West End Center in Lubbock. The free event takes place from 9:30am-12:30pm. The West End Center is located at West Loop 289 and 34th Street.

The Rawls Course will host the Area 17 Special Olympics Individual Golf Skills Competition on Saturday at 10 a.m. Sixteen Special Olympics athletes will be competing, with The Rawls Course’s Assistant Golf Professional, Tucker Allgood, overseeing the competition and instructing the participants. The 2016 Area 17 Golf Competition will host 3 delegations from the South Plains with athletes competing in the individual skills competition as well as a few competing in a nine-hole alternating shot competition. Members of the Texas Tech men’s and women’s golf teams will also be on hand to assist, including Wes Artac, who will play alongside one of the participants in the alternate shot tournament. The individual skills competition tests six golf skills, including Short Putting, Pitch Shot, Long Putting, Iron Shot, Chip Shot and Wood Shot. Athletes get five attempts for each skill event and can earn up to four points per attempt. Special Olympics Texas (SOTX) is a privately funded non-profit organization that changes lives through the power of sport by encouraging and empowering people with intellectual disabilities, promoting acceptance for all, and fostering communities of understanding and respect.

Saturday, Llano Estacado Winery will celebrate 40 years of Texas winemaking at the 23rd annual Grape Day Celebration. Grape Day is the largest festival held annually at the winery. There will be self-guided tours, art booths, local vendors, food, bounce houses for kids, and live music. The festival will take place Saturday from 10am-5pm, tickets are $5 and may be purchased at the door. Llano Estacado Winery is located 3.2 miles east of US Highway 87 on FM 1585. The Save-a-Pet Adoptathon will be held Saturday from 12 to 4 p.m. The event will be held at The Lubbock Animal Shelter, located at 3323 S.E. Loop 289. The adoption fees will be half-price during the event, dropping the price from $60 dollars to $30 dollars. Microchipping will be available for $5 dollars.
