On April 28, The Salvation Army of Lubbock was awarded a three year federal grant of $845,113 to cover operational costs of the Red Shield Home Transitional Living Program. With this grant, The Salvation Army will expand its services to take a three-tiered approach to eradicating cyclical homelessness that includes Emergency Sheltering, Transitional Sheltering and Transitional Housing programs.

In April, United Supermarkets pledged $150,000 over three years to renovate buildings that will be used for the Transitional Housing Program. More funding and/or donations are needed for building and renovation costs.

Targeted objectives of the Red Shield Home programs include: gaining employment, securing child care, acquiring transportation, increasing job skills, developing financial literacy training, and developing life skills.

The Red Shield Home Transitional Living Program is an expansion of the Emergency Sheltering program, which has been offered to individuals in need in Lubbock since the 1960’s.
The Red Shield Home includes:

1. The Emergency Sheltering Program currently provides free emergency shelter and food to homeless men, women, and families 24-hours a day, 365 days a year, for up to three nights every 90 days. The shelter capacity is 48 beds. Shower and laundry facilities are offered to all clients as well as voicemail and postal box services.

2. The Transitional Sheltering Program is a 30-90 day program that helps families work towards key objectives that allow them to become self-sufficient. While these families work towards these objectives, we provide them with basic needs including shelter. Recipients of this program are often single parents who are trying to support two to three children.

3. The Transitional Housing Program is a six month to two year program that provides housing and support services to individuals desiring to rise above poverty and to eliminate the constant threat of homelessness. The Transitional Housing Program will serve approximately six to nine families at any given time.
