The Lubbock City Council began its weekly meeting Thursday, June 28, with an update on the plan to abandon the Lubbock Municipal Auditorium and Coliseum.

As part of 2018's May 5th ballot, Lubbockites voted to abandon the facility, which would effectively transfer ownership to Texas Tech University. The school owned it previously.

Thursday, the council approved a resolution for the City Manager to begin negotiations with Texas Tech to terminate various agreements regarding operation, parking, and energy at the coliseum.

October 1st, 2018 is the intended date of transfer of the coliseum back to Texas Tech, as the city still has community events contracted through September 30th, as well as a lease agreement with Texas Tech Athletics.

According to the council, once ownership is transferred, Texas Tech plans to retain the coliseum for the Spring ABC Pro Rodeo. After that, the coliseum itself may face demolition.
