Anne Hathaway Strikes Back at Post-Baby Body Critics
Anne Hathaway has hit back at any potential body shamers who may feel the need to criticize her post-baby figure, as though all new mothers’ top priorities should revolve around slimming down as quickly as possible, immediately after giving birth.
Hathaway posted a photo to Instagram of an old pair of jeans she cut into shorts and wrote, “There is no shame in gaining weight during pregnancy (or ever). There is no shame if it takes longer than you think it will to lose the weight (if you want to lose it at all).
“There is no shame in finally breaking down and making your own jean shorts because last summer’s are just too dang short for this summer’s thighs.”
She continued, noting, “Bodies change. Bodies grow. Bodies shrink. It’s all love (don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.)”

While her response doesn’t appear to be related to any specific incident, Hathaway did recently elaborate on a negative experience she had at her gym that left her in tears.
Hathaway says she was approached during her workout by a trainer who offered to give her some pointers. She declined, noting she’d just given birth to her first child with husband Adam Schulman.
“I’m expecting him to say the thing that you say when someone says that they’ve had a baby. Which is, ‘Oh my God! You look great!’ Doesn’t matter if it’s true,” she said in an interview with Ellen DeGeneres. “So, I say to this guy, ‘I had a baby seven weeks ago,’ and he goes, ‘Oh, trying to lose the baby weight?'”
Hathaway continued, saying, “I just mustered up my dignity and say, ‘No, it’s a little bit too soon to worry about weight. I’m just trying to regain my strength.’ He said, ‘Great’ and walked away and I cried a little bit.”

Blake Lively — who gave birth to her first child with Ryan Reynolds back in December 2014 and is currently pregnant with baby No. 2 — echoed similar thoughts during a recent interview with Australia’s Sunrise.
Lively noted that pressure for new mothers to return to their pre-baby bodies is “unfair,” and hopes the focus will someday shift to celebrating the process of bringing new life into the world.
“It’s so celebrated, this is what someone can look like after a baby,” she said, “and I think a woman’s body after having a baby is pretty amazing. You don’t need to be Victoria’s Secret ready right away, because you just did the most incredible miracle that life has to offer. You gave birth to a human being. So I would really like to see that celebrated.”
