Globes and angels and stars are fine, but for the folks who like to be a little more imaginative with their Christmas-tree decorations—whether from boredom or budget—we’ve come up with a list of five unusual ways to help get the creative wheels in your noggin spinning:
Christmastime means garlands, garlands all over the place. When you see them hanging about shopping malls and your neighbors’ houses, you know the holiday season has arrived. As widespread as these decorative wreaths of flowers, leaves and twigs are, most people don’t really know why they’re associated with Christmas.
It’s going to happen, probably more than once or twice in your life. You’ll be out with your buddies, on the town, cruising the bars, knocking back beers and shots of tequila and whiskey. Or perhaps someone will challenge your drinking prowess, and you defend your honor with a booze-guzzling contest. Whatever the reasons may be, you’ve overdone it, and you wake up in the morning with a raging hangover.
Some people (naming no names here) spend an awful lot of time worrying about shark attacks. While statistically, the chance of a carnivorous fish ripping a huge chunk of meat off your body is pretty slim, it does happen on occasion. Most sharks aren’t really interested in human beings, but a few of them do like to take a nibble, or a whopping big bite now and again. The top culprits are, in order of the likelihood of attack, tiger sharks, bull sharks and great whites.
Ah, leave it to the Finns and their bizarre contests to make you scratch your head in wonder. This Northern European country, which is home to the Air Guitar World Championship, the Mosquito Swatting Championships and the Swamp Soccer Championships (just to name a few), is also the proud creator of the Wife Carrying World Championships.
Ray Bradbury, the man who penned numerous fantasy and science fiction classics of American literature, like ‘Fahrenheit 451’ and ‘The Martian Chronicles,’ died June 5th, 2012, in Los Angeles at the age of 91.
Bradbury was a master of the written word. His wonderful imagination seemed to hold no bounds. He wrote more than two-dozen novels in his lifetime, and helped cement science fiction as a true literary genre. His lyrical prose, combined with his provocative storylines, captivated the hearts and minds of his readers.
Shaking hands upon greeting someone new has become such a routine and automatic “Hello” response — that is, unless you’re one of those guys who bump fists or put people in head locks. As with most things, the majority of people just accept this act as customary without question, but for the rest of us, we want to know why we do it.
Oops, you’ve just said something terrible, or perhaps something you shouldn’t have said at all. You don’t want to invite the bad luck that will inevitably accompany your careless remarks, but what can you do? Knock on wood, of course. But why do we do that?
