The Dimmit, Texas man accused of committing Lubbock's first murder of 2015 has pleaded guilty and been handed a 30-year prison sentence.

According to Everything Lubbock, 24-year-old Casey McCalip Eby confessed in a State District Court to shooting and killing 36-year-old Lubbock man Elias Gonzales on January 1, 2015.

The Lubbock Police Department had issued an arrest warrant for Eby four days after the murder, which happened at Gonzales' home on 42nd St.

Records indicate Eby, who had purchased a handgun a day earlier, confronted Gonzales at the home after seeking him out. Eby reportedly tried to force his way into the home and, when stopped by Gonzales, pulled out a gun and shot him.

A victim impact statement written by Gonzales' sister Michele Cervantez made it clear that she believes Eby should receive the death penalty.

"As long as the person who is responsible for Elias’ death is allowed to take a breath, we will ache and long for justice to be served," wrote Cervantez.
