A tornado ripped through parts of Denton, Texas Sunday, May 10, 2015.

I got a text late yesterday from my stepson who works in Fort Worth telling me about the crazy weather they were having, and that there was a tornado in Denton.

My immediate thought was: "Oh my gosh! My brother George lives in Denton!"

I immediately called my brother and he sounded really shaken up when he answered the phone. He said the tornado had hit the opposite side of town from where he lives, adding that the tornado sirens went off for at least 30 minutes straight. He was talking to me after sitting in the bathtub with his dogs and cats for that whole time.

His wife was at work in Frisco, a safe distance away.

George said: "Sis, I've never been so scared, and kept thinking, wow, this is it and I don't have my wife with me." He said the sound was deafening and that he hadn't ever heard wind with force like that.

He also told me that the roof was completely ripped off of the Baptist church down the street from his house.

This past week we had not one, but two tornado scares here in the Lubbock area, and it really made me realize how complacent we have become. While our hopes and prayers are that we don't encounter severe weather and/or tornadoes in our area or any other, if it does, do you know what to do?

Have a plan -- whether you live in a house, dorm, or apartment. If you live in a multilevel building and need to seek shelter, go to the bottom floor and stay away from windows.

In a single-story structure, head for the closet or bathroom (bath tub) and pull a mattress or something comparable to it over you and your kids and pets for protection. Keep your heads covered.

If you are in a mobile home, get out. Even if it's tied down, get out and head to a permanent structure.

Keep a battery-powered radio with you to monitor weather and alerts and have flashlights ready with good batteries in the event you lose your electricity.
