A little more than a year ago, the Texas Open Carry law went into effect. Since then, I can honestly say that I have not seen one person carrying in the open. Maybe my timing is bad, or maybe I am hanging out at the wrong places.

Folks were worried that it was going to look like the wild west with guns strapped to every man, woman, and child, but it seems that hasn’t been the case. And no-one I know has witnessed gun toting citizens out and about, or maybe they just weren’t paying attention.

I saw a story on the local news about this very topic and they claim there has been little impact. I would tend to agree. But my question is: are we safer as a result of this law?

I am not sure, seems like things are about the same. It feels as if we have had more violent crimes reported in the recent past, but the number of victims defending themselves seems to have gone up, but I don’t think we can say it is because of this law. Rather people are more willing to protect themselves, with or without open carry being a factor.

What do you think about the effect the law has had on the Lubbock area? Do you feel safer now than a year ago? Let us know what you think!
