Just before 6 p.m. on Monday, March 21, Lubbock Police responded to a called of a pedestrian being run over by a vehicle in the 3000 block of Dartmouth Street.

When police arrived on the scene, they found 81-year-old Victor Cerda in grave condition after being backed over by a 2002 Ford Explorer. Cerda later died at the scene.

Lubbock Police explained how the accident occurred. Cerda was backing the Explorer out of his driveway when he exited the SUV to open a gate. The vehicle wasn't set in park and it continued to move in reverse. It ran over Cerda when he was behind the SUV. There was one passenger in the SUV at the time of the accident. They were unharmed.

The LPD Accident Investigation Team was called to the scene and they conducted a full investigation.
