I'm not a lip reader, but I think Elway's saying, "What a fantastic player!"

He couldn't possibly be cussing out the best pass-rush in the NFL for not being able to get their hands on Patrick Mahomes, right? I mean, was Elway watching pregame when the Chiefs needed a relay throw to get it back to Patrick on his warm-up tosses?

He wouldn't be calling for more blitzes, especially after plays like this where Mahomes avoids the pressure for a rushing touchdown:

Or after this easy play where the Broncos send four, and Mahomes escapes pressure up the middle and chunks the ball back the opposite direction of where his body is moving. Everyone can do this, right?

Maybe it was after this 2nd and 30 where Mahomes casually steps up, and around, some guy named Von Miller and gets a chunk back to make it 3rd and short:

Mahomes had just gotten 15 yards on a 3rd and 16 the previous drive:

My money is on this next play as the one that made Elway say whatever it is he said.

It's late in the 4th quarter, 3rd down and 5. It's too much pressure for a first-year starter. He's on the road in Denver. The pass rush has been close all night. He's exhausted his allotment of plays for the night and can't possibly do more.

Oh, but he can. He can also throw left-handed.

HE CAN THROW FOR FIRST DOWNS LEFT-HANDED.

The comparisons for Mahomes last night were Joe Montana, Aaron Rodgers and Brett Favre.

It's just incredible.

This was Patrick Mahomes' fifth game as an NFL starter. He's 5-0. The Chiefs are 4-0 this season, and in the discussion as the best team in the NFL. I can only think of the Rams as a team that I'd put ahead of Mahomes and Cannon City.

There might potentially be an AFC Championship preview as the Chiefs host the Jaguars and the best defense in the AFC this Sunday. If Mahomes can have success against Jalen Ramsey and the Jaguars, I think a lot of GMs and coaches will be echoing the Hall of Famer John Elway's sentiments.

It's just not that easy.
