They've been around for almost 40 years, filling arenas, racking up plenty of hits, and selling millions of records along the way -- but the guys in Kansas have never had one of their songs covered by a bunch of costume-wearing metal enthusiasts. Until now, that is.

We're talking, of course, about GWAR, who were recently invited to take part in the A.V. Club's ongoing 'Undercover' series, which finds current bands performing unlikely covers of songs by disparate artists. And they don't come much more disparate than Kansas, a band whose instrumental proficiency and fondness for extended song suites helped bridge the gap between all-out prog and blue-collar AOR during the '70s.

(Or, as new GWAR guitarist Pustulus Maximus puts it in the video, "Kansas was a big part of a music where bands were often named after geographical locations. Let’s hope that never happens again.")

As you might expect given that quote, GWAR took a somewhat irreverent approach to the band's 1976 hit, which peaked at Number 11 on the Billboard Hot 100. In fact, they added some new lyrics, including the lines "Carry on my wayward son / Get the hell off the couch and get a god---- job / Get your ass out the door / Don’t you cry no more." We're, uh, clearly not in Kansas anymore -- but if you've been looking for a fresh spin on 'Carry on Wayward Son,' have a listen.
