Houston Attorney Files Federal Lawsuit Over Ted Cruz’s Eligibility for President

The issue over Ted Cruz's citizenship is not going away. The day after Cruz confronted Donald Trump on the debate stage over his eligibility to run and serve as President, a federal lawsuit has been filed against Cruz.

According to the Houston Chronicle, Houston trial attorney Newton Schwartz wants the courts to decided whether Cruz is eligible to serve as President.

Cruz was born in Calgary, Alberta, Canada to an American-born mother and a Cuban father. Cruz held duel citizenship until 2014 when he renounced his Canadian citizenship.

In Thursday night's Republican Presidential Debate, Donald Trump claimed that there would be a lawsuit challenging Cruz's standing if Cruz is not able to clear up the situation himself.

The Cruz campaign, along with numerous legal scholars, claim that Ted Cruz is eligible to serve as President and does qualify as a natural-born citizen.

In court filings, Schwartz says that no one put him up to the lawsuit and that he is filing the lawsuit on behalf of the American people in order to avoid a messy situation in the future if Cruz wins the nomination, but is then found ineligible to serve.
