A new study confirms what we have heard all of our lives: Location, location, location.

Geography plays a huge role according to this study, which not only correlates counties with income mobility, but also suggests that some places actually cause it.

According to the study, Lubbock County is below average in helping children from poor homes/living in poverty move up the income ladder. Lubbock County ranked 671st out of 2,478 counties, which means that 27 percent of counties fared worse than Lubbock County.

In addition, the study showed that Lubbock County ranked worse in helping poor girls than poor boys to succeed. Yet Lubbock County ranked above average in helping children from mid to higher income families succeed.

The study also estimates how much 20 years of childhood in Lubbock County adds or takes away from a child's future income.

Nationwide, it reveals that factors associated with strong upward mobility are: less segregation by income and race; lower levels of income equality; better schools; lower rates of violent crime; and a larger share of two-parent households.
