A City of Lubbock employee attempted to drive a skid steer over the pedestrian bridge at Mae Simmons park. And even though skid steers are lighter than cars and trucks, pedestrian bridges are designed for, well, pedestrians.

I guess I shouldn't call this person an idiot because there's no guarantee that given the same situation I might have also assumed the bridge could hold the weight. But then again, skid steers aren't light by any means. They're mini bulldozers, essentially, so it was still an ill-advised move.

The city's crews are working to retrieve the equipment from the water. The bridge crosses a river, so now everything is in the river.

Jeff McKito with the City of Lubbock said that five people were taken to the hospital after the incident: three city employees and two firefighters.

Everything Lubbock has pictures of the incident.
