Lubbock City Council Approves First Readings of Proposed Annexations

Thursday night, the Lubbock City Council held a regularly scheduled meeting at City Hall.  The council by unanimous votes, passed the First Readings of two different proposed sets of annexation.

The first proposed annexation taken up was approved 6-0, with Mayor Robertson abstaining.  The land to be annexed is 338 acres north, and west, of the current city limits, north of Lubbock Preston Smith International Airport. The land is located south of the New Deal city limits, south of County Road 5800, east of North Avenue P, north of County Road 5900 and west of the current city limits near Ash Avenue.

The city council, by a 7-0 vote, also approved the First Reading of a larger-scale annexation in South Lubbock. Up to almost 2,400 acres of land, south of the current city limits, between Avenue U to Milwaukee Avenue, to 148th Street is slated to be annexed.  However, land owners that turn in 212 or Chapter 43 agreements can postpone annexation of their property for up to 20 years.

A proposal put forth by Mayor Glen Robertson to no longer collect sales tax on residential electrical and natural gas bills was tabled.  If ordinance would have been approved, the city would have had to come up with over $2 million to cover a shortfall in the general fund.

The Second Reading for the two proposed annexations will be held on Thursday, April 28.
