Former Texas Tech quarterback Davis Webb has been released from the New York Giants.

The decision was described as "stunning" by ESPN reporter Jordan Raanan, who broke the news on Twitter early Sunday afternoon.

According to the New York Post, Webb's departure "was part of a wild day of dealing by the Giants, who claimed and were awarded six players off waivers." The outlet framed the decision as a "stunning player movement, and an indication how lacking the new decision-makers viewed the talent on the roster," explaining that after a 3-13 season, "The Giants...are purging nearly all remnants of that disaster."

Webb was drafted by the Giants in the 3rd round of the 2017 NFL Draft. He left Lubbock in 2016 to play for the California Golden Bears after Patrick Mahomes won the starting QB position for Texas Tech University.

Webb threw for for 9,852 yards and 83 touchdowns with a 61 completion percentage during his combined time at Cal and Texas Tech.
