In this edition of Once Upon a Time in Lubbock, we look at Mojo’s. Oh ,sorry, I mean Shakeys Pizza and their delicious Mojo’s.

Shakeys Pizza was located at 4502 50th Street in Lubbock. (It now houses a payday loan company, but I'm sure every loan comes with an order of Mojo's!)

The Lubbock location opened in the late 1960s or early 1970s and was a haven of good pizza. And did I mention Mojo’s?

This was another one of those places that were considered special when I was a kid. It was a treat to go, have pizza, and yep, you guessed it, Mojo’s, while getting to play Pac-Man and watching my father drink cheap beer.

In case you don't know what a Mojo is (what kind of beast are you?!), it was a thickly sliced potato that was lightly battered and deep fried. They were the best!

Alas, they didn't believe in their Lubbock family much; they closed in the late 1980s. Since the Lubbock location closed, it has been the Thrifty Nickle and Texas Car Title & Payday Loan.

The history of Shakey’s Pizza Parlor begins in 1954, when Sherwood “Shakey” Johnson opened the first Shakey’s Pizza Parlor® in a remodeled grocery store on 57th and J Street in Sacramento, California. Originally established as “Ye Public House” for pizza & beer, Johnson indulged his passion for Dixieland jazz and added live ragtime music to mix, featuring banjos and player pianos throughout his rapidly expanding franchise. As the concept caught on, the Shakey’s name became synonymous with the World’s Greatest Pizza® along with light-hearted slogans such as “You’ll have fun at Shakey’s, also pizza,” and “You can feed your face at any old place, but you can warm your heart at Shakey’s.” For 60 years, Shakey’s has provided fun, food, music and memories for generations of pizza lovers.  We believe in family at Shakey’s!
