Unfortunate news for fans of Firefly and accomplished film and TV actor Ron Glass, as the Emmy-nominated Barney Miller star has passed away at age 71. Glass had also appeared in everything from The Twilight Zone to Friends, and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Glass’ representation confirmed reports of the actor’s passing, though no immediate detail of the circumstances or location was made available. After word broke, several of Glass’s TV co-stars took to Twitter to share their remembrances, including Joss Whedon himself:

Born in Indiana, and studying there as well, Glass began his acting career with early roles in shows like Sanford and Son and All in the Family, before breaking out in 1975's Barney Miller. The actor could be seen in numerous favorites over the years, including Family Matters and Friends, before landing the 2002 role of Shepherd Derrial Book on the short-lived Firefly. Glass reprised the role for 2005's Serenity, and still maintained active credits through 2014, including Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Best thoughts go out to his family, and all those remembering Ron Glass’ body of work.
