On Friday (April 20), school students across the nation walked out to protest gun laws in the United States. Friday was the 19th anniversary of the 1999 school shooting at Columbine High School in Colorado. Students throughout Texas, including in Lubbock, joined with organizers in the latest school walkout.

According to the Dallas Morning News, a sixth grade student was killed after leaving his middle school.

The student attempted to cross a highway and was struck and killed by a car. While the student left the school during the walkout, the district superintendent said the student was part of another group who left the school grounds all together instead of going to the on-campus protest site.

From Dallas Morning News:

He left in a group of students as part of a  "separate, isolated event," the Times reported. Students walked to the middle school's football field to gather for the walkout, but a small group hopped over a wall and left campus, according to the students' accounts to the Times. No other students were hurt, officials said.

The Dallas Morning News reported that no charges had been filed in the student's death.
