Russell Tchewa has verbally committed to the Texas Tech Red Raiders to be a part of their 2019 recruiting class, which begins officially committing November 14th on early national signing day.

The news was first reported last night by Evan Daniels, a national recruiting analyst, on Twitter:

Tchewa is a bit of a mystery after my research, but he is attending Putnam Science Academy for this season, the former home of current Red Raiders Malik Ondigo and Joshua Mballa. Hard to ignore that the PSA is becoming a major pipeline for head coach Chris Beard and Texas Tech.

The mystery isn't ominous; it's just that there isn't a ton of info out there on the young man who has also played internationally on several different squads. Tchewa is listed anywhere from 6'9" to 7'0" throughout his international career, which isn't surprising considering he's only 18 and likely still growing. He might even walk on campus next summer taller than seven feet. His most common listed weight was around 250 pounds.

Tchewa is an athletic seven-footer who seems to have a firm grasp on his skill set, which isn't always the case for a young big man. In the admittedly limited action below you can clearly see the beginnings of a strong post presence and some athletic transition buckets. He also has strong hand-eye coordination which is another thing seven-foot dudes struggle with.

Here's another set of highlights where Tchewa isn't the star of every possession. Hard to judge an almost five-minute clip, but Chris Beard and company have obviously seen something in the young big man. For reference, Tchewa wears number 20:

Tchewa joins fellow 2019 commits Kevin McCullar and Khalid Thomas.

Let's not get too ahead of ourselves, though. The 2018-19 Texas Tech basketball season is less than a month away, and it's shaping up to be an absolute doozie.
