Texas Tech Is Rolling Behind Big 12 Player of the Week Michael Davis
Texas Tech sophomore infielder Michael Davis was named Big 12 Player of the Week after doing his part in the sweep of the Oklahoma State Cowboys this weekend.
Davis is the 4th Red Raider to get this honor in 2016 after Eric Gutierrez, Tanner Gardner and Stephen Smith.
He received the honor after an 11 RBI week, including the Sunday Big 12 finale against OSU that included seven RBIs -- six of which came on two bases-clearing doubles. It was the most RBIs for a Red Raider in a Big 12 contest since Gera Alvarez drove in seven runs against Baylor on May 19, 2002.
The Lubbock native began the series with the game-winning RBI in Friday’s 5-1 victory. His RBI single was the second of two hits in the win for Davis, who wrapped the Oklahoma State series with a .500 average (6-for-12) to go along with a team-leading nine RBI.
In addition, Davis also knocked in a pair of runs in Tech’s 8-4 victory at No. 5 Florida State on Wednesday as he finished 2-for-5 overall. He recorded the game-winning RBI in three of Tech’s four victories during the week.
The sweep of OSU is the third straight that Texas Tech has had in Big 12 play after winning the first Big 12 series 2-1 over Baylor. Texas Tech has enjoyed a great amount of success recently in the Big 12 and their 11-1 record is the best start they have ever enjoyed in the Big 12. They have even ordered new uniforms for the next Big 12 series:
Joking aside, before the next Big 12 series Texas Tech will face three teams: Sam Houston, San Diego and New Mexico. The team returns to the Big 12 to play Texas on April 22 - 24.
The seven games in between today and April 22 are crucial for this season. Any losses will affect the team's RPI tremendously.
RPI, for the uninitiated, is the most important rating system in college baseball. It's the most universal system for ranking teams in the sport. Texas Tech is ranked 12th right now. Any loss in the next seven games would drop them considerably.
Hopefully, Michael Davis and the Red Raiders keep using those new uniforms.
