The Lubbock Animal Shelter recently used its Facebook account to issue a plea on behalf of poor Miss Lorelei, who was so extraordinarily matted that she was less recognizable as a dog and appeared much more like an over-used mop head.

Looks aside, a dog with this much matting can face mild to extreme health consequences:

It's a painful condition that can lead to other health concerns such as infections or skin irritations and can also mask other health issues or parasites. Mats cut off the air flow in your dog's hair and can trap moisture, which can cause irritation and sores on your dog. Even mild matting can be painful, but in severe cases, matting can cut off circulation to your dog's skin and cause hematomas. In some circumstances, matting may be so severe that you would need to take your dog to a veterinarian for treatment.

I can't imagine the pain and irritation Miss Lorelei was experiencing. But thanks to the volunteered services of a Lubbock groomer, she has a new lease on life and looks like a completely different, and absolutely beautiful, animal.

Camy York of Heavenly Paws Grooming & Spa (3410 98th Street, #8) didn't do this challenging and involved groom for clout or attention. In fact, I had to seek her out.

She told me she wanted to do this groom because:

I do lots of fluffy doodles and poodles and shih-tzus all day everyday...but these pups that really "NEED" my help...these are the ones that give me purpose and make me proud to be a groomer.

She should be proud. Just look at these photos:

After bathing, and a tremendous amount of careful work to get the matts off without snipping this baby:

After a ton of work, there was a beautiful schnauzer underneath. Even more importantly, look at how happy she is!

Miss Lorelei had an application for her adoption already in before she was groomed, further proving that taking a chance on a literal underdog really works out.

Thank you Camy for your incredible groom, and thank you Lubbock Animal Shelter for your continued advocacy for our local animals.
