Yes, technological advancements have paved the way for solving numerous 'cold cases'. Still, you would be hard-pressed to find an Abby Sciuto in the lab breaking open cases with nothing more than a strand of hair and a trace of Shiner beer in a victim's digestive tract.

Perseverance and Technology

Right now, the Texas Department of Public Safety's Unsolved Homicides website features nearly 50 solved 'cold case' murders. 27 of those cases have been solved or closed in the last five years.

Generally, cases are considered solved when the offender has been arrested and turned over to the court for prosecution.

Advancements in technology, especially at the microscopic level, have been at the root of many of these cases being solved. That's one major aspect of these recent successes in crime-solving. The other is the dedication and perseverance of detectives and Texas Rangers re-opening and exhaustively researching these cases.

Even though many 'cold case' homicides have been solved, there are still many more to go. The Texas DPS features 13 top unsolved cases, many of them dating back 30+ years.
