A Heartfelt Letter of Love and Gratitude to Lubbock Public Libraries
I spent hours at Mahon Library with my mom when I was little. It was my favorite place. We usually went at least once a week. My mom would pick out a stack of books on tape to listen to on her Walkman while she exercised. I would hang out in the kids' room for various storytime hours and episodes of Paddington Bear, and then I'd pick out a stack of books to take home. I'll cherish memories of time spent with my mother at the library forever. It was as comforting as an overnight stay at my doting grandparent's home. I loved it there.
I remember looking through my book selection on the way home and trying to decide which one to read first. Reading took me far away from this dusty town to places where anything was possible. The library inspired me. It cultivated a love for literature, a respect for quiet time, and a desire to learn. For that, I am truly grateful.
I didn't realize the Lubbock Public Libraries were much more than buildings full of incredible stories, cozy reading spaces, and smiling librarians until I was older.
Lubbock Public Libraries are also a safe haven for people in town who are down on their luck.
All four branches of the Lubbock Public Library offer the homeless community a spot to warm up during winter months and the opportunity to transport themselves to a happier place through the pages of countless tales of triumph against all odds.
