Attention Texans: Stop Messing with Santa Claus’s Look!
I'm trying to stay jolly here, but this is just unacceptable.
Drawing The Line
I'm usually the guy who says, "Let people enjoy what they want to enjoy". I almost always fall on the permissive side of the coin. I'm also a bit stoic in my nature in that I try not to let things upset me that don't concert me. I am, in fact, uncomfortable breaking out of my usual nature, to produce a bit of rage-bait.
The Real Santa
I'm a fan of what is often referred to as the "Coca-Cola Santa Claus". The version you see of Santa Claus was actually commissioned an artist in 1931 to create the image of Santa you see today. That image is so iconic, I don't really even have to describe it, you know exactly what Santa Claus looks like...and so does every single other American.
Another Bad Santa
Right now Target is trying to promote what is being called a "Zaddy Claus", a younger, but still greying, metrosexual looking Santa. That Santa is no doubt directed at moms, so I'm going to give those moms a pass. My bigger problem is what is happening in my own backyard.
Too Texas
There are people in Texas, who take the Texas thing just a little to far. This would be the case of my local mall promoting "Cowboy Claus". This version of Santa has the perfect face and snow-white hair and beard for the roll, but is dressed all wrong. Instead that traditional wide black belt, he's wearing one of those big rodeo-type buckles. He isn't wearing the coat, but instead a white shirt with red suspenders. He then tops off the look with a red cowboy hat, which is a thing that itself should no exist.
It's No Bueno!
I have no family left to visit a Santa. None of this should matter to me. What does matter to me is that some kids are being robbed of the job of meeting the "real Santa" and instead are getting this awful approximation. This isn't the Santa they see on TV, read about in books, or who has been an icon for almost 100 years. I know times change, but the is absolutely no reason for Santa to. This entire idea needs to be scrapped and thrown into a flaming dumpster.
