Elon Musk Statue In South Texas Was Defaced- But There’s More To The Story
A thread in r/Texas is going viral after a giant 9-foot tall bust of Elon Musk was recently defaced. There are giant gashes and gouges on the face of the "likeness". My best guess is that someone took a small ax to the structure.
Was this an act of political protest? Possibly, but this statue is a little more complex than that, so its defacement raises some questions.
There was a 9 foot statue of Elon Musk in Texas?
You may not have known this thing even existed. Its creation is steeped in internet culture and irony, so it merits a little explaining.
According to ARTnews, the sculpture was commissioned by a French tech entrepreneur who goes by the moniker Louis XXII, whose main purpose in creating the giant bust was to heighten awareness of an already viral drawing of Elon Musk.
The drawing went viral because it was hilariously bad yet earnest, which is always a great formula for comedy.
I wish to see the weird Elon Musk statue in person. Where is it?
The statue was placed in Boca Chica near the Space X facility. Louis XXII also commissioned a large mural of the bad drawing with the words "Occupy Mars" in South Texas.
The sculpture (which doesn't look too bad from the angle above) has lopsided features and doesn't exactly "give" Elon Musk. It was designed after a 3D rendering of the aforementioned internet-famous poor drawing and then created out of foam and fiberglass- so repairing it shouldn't be too difficult if Louis XXII decides to do so. Or perhaps he'll let the defacement stand as part of this already convoluted and bizarre conversation- which is what modern art is all about, right?
