I think we all needed a moment to digest last Saturday's Texas Tech game. It was a heartbreaker of a loss and to discuss anything but that, seemed like piling on.

The Incident

As you may or may not know, the field goal kicker for the Texas Tech game celebrated a score by displaying a political message under his jersey. I have to say, I don't care if it's a political message or what side it's for, it doesn't nothing positive for the team and nothing positive for politics. The people that get excited about that kind of thing were always going to vote that way and the people who vote for the other side lost a little respect for the guy. There was just nothing to gain.

The Message

So what about that message? The best way to boil things down is, what if it were a different message. I'm of the belief that even if it just said, "Hi Mom!" that it had no place in the game. First off, it was a premature celebration so you look like a jackass when or if your team loses and secondly, it puts the entire team on blast.  It's also crazy he didn't get flagged for taunting/excessive celebration. I guess I should also ask, where does it end? What's going to keep the other guys from putting messages on their shirts, or even advertising?  It's just another layer of b.s.

Making Statements

I guess to be fair we have to ask, "How is this different from when players were kneeling?" I'd say one was before game and the other was during it. It's the difference from when you are representing yourself, and when you are representing a team (which is ultimately why it stopped). I guess you could debate that all day, but for me, it's really about celebrating when there's so much game left to play.

The Result

So karma came for the kicker in the form of a blown field goal that could have made a difference in the game. The Coach has said he's going to handle the problem internally, and that's good. It certainly sucks that on top of trying to get the team back on track that the coach also has to deal with this, but I guess that's why he makes the big bucks.  I will say that the coach's responses about the incident indicate to me that he's the right guy in charge. He indicated that football is all about the team, and this falls outside of that.
