Lubbock does it's best to stay budget friendly by doing as little as possible. The Hub City relies on philanthropy to build things, and it's not so reliable anymore.

I guess we'll play a game of "If I was mayor...". If I was mayor, I'd want to leave behind one thing that was good for all of the people in Lubbock. It could be a park, a pool, a bike trail, or something. It wouldn't be about me needing credit, it would be about meaning more to the city than a pencil pusher.

In Lubbock we tend to not invest in our infrastructure. Instead we dream big, and take those dreams to potential sponsors and corporations and hope that naming rights and goodwill get those things down.

Big Dreams, No Bulldozers

Right now the way Lubbock does things is failing on two counts. First there is the Lubbock Expo Center, which is way short on funding, and now, dissension over the location—at least in my opinion—threatens the project.

Next up would be the park that is supposed to be built downtown. The property seems to just be sitting there with little to no attention even being paid to how it looks presently. Now the city may have to get involved to make sure something gets done.

I am absolutely positive that all or most of the parties involved in both of these projects would highly object to the term "in jeopardy", but the evidence says otherwise. I drive past the original location for the Expo Center at least twice a week and nothing is happening. The downtown park is a fenced-in lot overgrown with weeds.. All this is evidence that the way Lubbock does projects just isn't working anymore.
