Lubbock woke up to a fresh blanket of snow Sunday morning.

The Upside

The good news? The snow fell during the weekend, meaning fewer people are out on the roads in Lubbock. It’s also easier to cancel plans or postpone errands until Monday. That’s the bright side of the situation.

The Otherside

The not-so-good news is that temperatures are expected to hover near or below freezing through Tuesday (the projected high for today is 33 and that's the warmest it will be). This creates a real concern: slush. As ground temperatures and other factors contribute to melting, the slush is likely to refreeze, potentially forming ice. This could lead to hazardous driving conditions over the next 24 to 48 hours. Whether we’ll be dealing with widespread sheets of ice or just isolated icy patches is still uncertain, but either way, it could be messy.

Conditions Now

As of 6 a.m. Saturday, there have been no updates on road conditions or any confirmation that bridges have been salted or cleared. That doesn’t necessarily mean it hasn’t happened or won’t happen, but it’s safe to assume that efforts to clear the roads are still in the planning stages due to the surprise nature of this snowstorm.

Strategy

Your best strategy right now is to make time your ally. Use this opportunity to plan ahead, monitor updates, and adjust your schedule as needed. Most importantly, if you must travel, give yourself plenty of extra time to get where you’re going. No matter how the situation evolves—whether snowmelt creates icy patches or full-on ice sheets—rushing is simply not an option. Stay safe, stay patient, and stay alert.
