A major mall retailer has plans to close 150 stores, with 55 shuttering before year's end.

Macy's department store, founded in 1858, has a long history, including parades, 4th of July displays, and even the inclusion of Toys R Us in stores.

But even 166 years in business can't save every store in light of changes to consumer spending habits and a post-pandemic world.

Macy's has been a mall favorite for many years- with proprietary brands and a focus on designer items like handbags and fragrances. Shopping at Macy's just feels special.

Macy's has a total of 508 stores, so losing a total of 150 soon is a massive loss, but a necessary one. the brand will use the opportunity to gain real estate windfall, and to refocus its brand, according to Retail Wire:

The mall mainstay is purportedly concentrating more on its well-known high-margin luxury products in an attempt to attract customers with a little more disposable income.

Macy's has yet to announce which stores will be closed in the coming months, however with 37 Texas locations, it's likely the Lone Star State will lose a few stores.

 

Houston and San Antonio both have 4 locations each, so my guess is that those areas may "consolidate" their Macy's, so to speak.

Of course, it is possible (albeit unlikely) that Texas doesn't lose a single location, as other states have a higher Macy's presence- California has a whopping 88 locations.

When I shop, I prefer to see things in person, to feel the fabric, to try things on. I sincerely hope that at least some brick-and-mortar retail survives, otherwise, it'll be a nightmare of ill-fitting clothes for all of us.
