Nightmare Fuel: Street Caves In, Texas Driver Falls Into Massive Sinkhole
DALLAS, Texas - A man drove into a massive sinkhole in the middle of the street in a Pleasant Grove neighborhood on Monday, leading to a trip to the hospital.
Kim Johnson was headed down Riverway Drive in a truck pulling a trailer behind it when he remembered something he'd forgotten at home. He turned around to head back in the other direction when suddenly, the street caved in.
Johnson tried to brace himself, but says he still hit his windshield more than 4 times while falling into the hole.
Neighbors in the area said the sewer lines were bad near the sinkhole, so bad that not only can you smell them, you can hear them too if you listen closely. This is also allegedly not the first time a sinkhole has formed in the neighborhood.
One neighbor, Terrence Perkins, claims there is a drainage problem in the area. He said that when heavy rains occur, the White Rock Dam opens and floods their neighborhood with debris, leading to erosion under their street.
The city confirmed there was a failure in the wastewater mainline and expects to have the repairs completed by Thursday.
Take a look at the sinkhole below:
Unfortunately, there is no database of sinkhole collapses that occur in the United States each year, something I think we could all benefit from.
It's another reminder of the importance of tax money that goes toward Texas's ever-crumbling infrastructure. It may seem like a pain, but in the long run, you'd rather be safe than sorry.
