Texas is just too dang big.

We have a problem here in Texas and it's pretty simple, we have rural areas dictating how the city folks live. That is just not cool.  It's not going to be perfect, but some of this could be taken care of if we slice up the state like a big o'l pecan pie.

So in this last election, almost all of the major population centers voted one way and most of the rural places voted another, since Texas is so vast, the rural folks won out.  It seems really off that country people who have a very different set of concerns are holding our cities back. I mean, live your small-town life if you want to, but the rest of us would like to move forward.

Now before you think this is just one person's harebrained idea, there is/was actually a movement to make this happen called Texas Divisionism. As a matter of fact, there was an entire movement in 1915 to make a state out of the Texas panhandle called "Jefferson". The claim is that dividing into up to five states is permitted under the resolution that brought Texas into the union.

When you think about it, what does a place like Amarillo have in common with Austin, or what does El Paso have to do with Houston? They are all very different places with different cultures and different concerns.

Will something like this ever happen? Well, without the collapse of the entire United States, the answer is almost certainly "no". It doesn't matter which party is in power, none will want to concede any of it. The U.S. also has some kind of problem getting past that 50 number, so I'm sure there would be fights about that as well (I see you, Puerto Rico).

So since we can't split apart, maybe we could work together for the future of Texas. Let the city be the city and let the country be the country.
