The purpose of government is simple: to look out for its citizens—and it should be judged by how it treats the people who need help the most.

That’s why it’s so troubling that Texas Governor Greg Abbott vetoed a $60 million state budget item that would have unlocked roughly $450 million in federal funds to help feed hungry children this summer.

When Politics Wins, Hungry Kids Lose

Because of this veto, thousands of kids across Texas will go without food assistance. It's not just a bad policy decision—it’s a moral failure. Hungry, hot, and bored is a dangerous mix, and for too many Texas kids, that’s exactly what this summer will look like.

Let’s be honest: kids can’t just “get a job.” They can’t drive to go find food. And they certainly can’t change their family’s financial situation. Denying help to children who are already struggling is not just short-sighted—it’s cruel.

I remember times in my life when school lunch was the only meal I could count on. I was lucky enough to afford the minimal cost, and that one meal kept me going. For many families today, that kind of access is critical—and summer programs like the one Abbott just blocked are the lifeline when school is out.

I’m not even interested in the political back-and-forth. When it comes to hungry kids, there is no excuse. The return on investment was huge—not just financially, but in basic human decency.

This was a heartless move. I’m ashamed it happened. And now, more than ever, we need to find ways—as individuals and as communities—to step up and help the children Texas has turned its back on.
