If you are looking for a reason to get out of the house and learn a new skill, I highly suggest learning a new dance. This is an especially great thing to do for a date night with your partner, or as a night out with a group of friends.

From April through June, Social Dance Lubbock will be hosting a series of Latin dance lessons including Salsa, Bachata, and Merengue.

These lessons happen twice a month on Saturday evenings from 6:00 to 9:00 at the YWCA Sun 'n Fun. They are typically the 2nd and 4th weekend of the month, but April will look different due to Easter falling on the second weekend of the month. This means that April’s lessons will be on the 15th and 22nd.

They will start with Salsa in April, before moving on to Bachata in May and Merengue in June. Each lesson starts at 6:00 and goes for around an hour. The lesson is then followed up with a dance party to show off the new moves you learned and practice any other dance styles you might know.

The instructors are kind, talented, and eager to help you learn, so don’t be intimidated. I used to be on the South Plains College Ballroom Dance Team with them, and they ensure everyone has a good time.

There is a $10 cover per person ($5 for YWCA members) and they accept cash only. There will be refreshments and light snacks provided as well. are also not required to come with a partner.

If Latin styles aren’t what you are interested in, they will be moving onto other ballroom and swing styles following this three-month series. Just keep an eye on their Facebook page for more information.
