Here in Texas, our weather is all over the place. Sometimes we feel like it is the hottest or coldest day when we are out in the weather. But what weather has Texas really seen?

They are a big difference in temperature on both sides of the extreme. Stacker shared the list of each state's most extreme weather and the numbers for Texas might shock you.

"Stacker consulted 2019 data from the NOAA's State Climate Extremes Committee (SCEC) to create this slideshow illustrating the hottest and coldest temperatures ever recorded in each state."

According to the site, these are the findings for Texas:

  • Highest temperature: 120° F in Seymour 3NW on Aug. 12th, 1936
  • Lowest temperature: -23° F in Tulia Near on Feb. 12th, 1899
  • Highest 24-hour precipitation: 42 inches in Alvin on July 25 - 26, 1979
  • Highest 24-hour snowfall: 26 inches in Hillsboro on Dec. 20 - 21, 1929

Last summer in Texas during the months of May, June and July brought the hottest average temperatures on record in Texas. During those months there were 36 consecutive days of triple-digit temperatures in the northern part of the state. The Big Ben region experienced 78 days of temperatures over 100 degrees Fahrenheit.

The horrible heat wave of 1936 claimed the lives of around 5,000 people across the U.S. During the 2019 heat wave in Texas, Galveston's temperature stayed at 100 degrees for 40 hours. The heat felt even worse due to high humidity levels.

February 1899 was cold in part due to a bitterly cold outbreak from the 11th through the 13th. Even though the temperature says -23° F there were unofficial reports that were even colder.  Low temperatures of 30 degrees below zero were measured that night at Wolf Creek and at a site southeast of Perryton, both in Ochiltree County according to the National Weather Service.

Here is a list of the record lows at some cities across Texas from the NWS:

Abilene: 9 below zero set in 1947
