The 4-day school week idea is spreading across the Lone Star State as school districts try to find ways to retain teachers and make the job more appealing to future educators.

Slaton ISD on Thursday approved the 4-day school week during the school board meeting by a 4-2 vote according to KAMC.

The new school day, when the plan goes into effect, will begin at 7:30 a.m. and end at 4:30 p.m. That is an additional 30 minutes added to each school day. According to KAMC, the current class period is 45 minutes long. The new class period will run 57 minutes with shorter times for elementary school kids.

School officials still don't know if Monday's or Friday's would be the day off as they are still working that out. The new 4 day school week will go into effect in the Fall of 2023 and according to KAMC, Slaton ISD officials say younger kids will get longer recess and teachers will benefit from the move.

A 4-day work week would include longer recess for younger kids, an extra day of planning for teachers and add better work-life balance for teachers. School officials told the public this new schedule is expected to increase teacher effectiveness and retention.

There are more than 60 school districts in Texas that have moved or will be moving to a 4-day school week. Expect more in the coming months.
