Code Enforcement Coming to Tech Terrace: Here’s What They’re Looking For

If you know anyone who lives in Tech Terrace, then now's the time to warn them that city code inspectors will be marching through Wednesday—that's tomorrow—between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.

If you have anything in or around your property that is against Lubbock city code, consider this your warning to do something about it unless you want a friendly fine. To avoid that, let's also look at what the city does and doesn't allow on curbsides and roadways.

Like I said, inspectors are passing through Tech Terrace tomorrow starting at 8 a.m. Their field office at 31st Street and Elgin Avenue will answer any questions or concerns any residents may have, along with a massive dumpster for bulky item disposal.

What Violates Lubbock Code?

In the Hub City, there are certain restrictions for homeowners and renters that must be adhered to, even if the residence isn't a part of an HOA (homeowners association).

For instance, it's the responsibility of the homeowner to keep the sidewalk free from overgrown plants, fence debris, or other hazards that "interfere with the free passage of vehicles on the street or alley, or of pedestrians on the sidewalk," according to city code.

This also includes overhanging tree branches. Those need to be trimmed by the homeowner if they encroach on the sidewalk or road. Tree limbs must not pass the 12-foot vertical ceiling above roadways or 8 feet above sidewalks.

Finally, junked vehicles that have been parked at the curb for more than 30 days are subject to fines since they are considered a health and safety concern. You just never know what critters use it as a home, what toxic fluids are leaking into the environment, and how many children are at risk when playing around the parked vehicle.

Here's a tip: If you see a neighbor with junked vehicles and bulky items like downed tree branches or old furniture at their curb for over a month, you can always call 311 and report the violation.
