It's the start of a brand new year and we already have one big restaurant that has closed its doors in Lubbock.

Just because its a new year doesn't mean some switch is flipped and things magically improve for businesses. It was just last week when fans of Sprinkles Cupcakes were shocked by the news that they would soon be leaving Lubbock. And they were just here for over a year.

The latest restaurant to announce that they are closing is one that has been around since 2007 in Lubbock.

Pei Wei is now closed after about an 18 year run in Lubbock. They did pause operations for a few days back in 2020 due to a gas leak, but this time the doors are closed permanently. The Lubbock location has been scrubbed from Pei Wei's website, the phone is disconnected and even Google says the business is closed. Pei Wei was located at Kingsgate Center North at 4210 82nd St. #230.

While it's sad to see any business close the market for Asian food in Lubbock continues to grow more competitive. Lubbock is known as a dine-out/foodie town, but with costs rising to dine out, more and more people are opting for different options. And when it comes to dining out, we are seeing people make different decisions on where their money is being spent and chain restaurants are taking a hit across the nation.

One listener did tell us that they weren't surprised by the news of Pei Wei closing its Lubbock location.

I knew it was coming. I go there for lettuce wraps a few times a month for lunch and there’s NEVER a soul in there. Sad.

Hopefully Lubbock won't lose as many businesses as we did in 2024.
