
Several Tornadoes Confirmed On The South Plains From Last Thursday’s Storm
On Thursday, June 5, 2025, a major severe weather event took place over the South Plains including in Lubbock. A supercell thunderstorm began west of Lubbock County during the afternoon and produced several tornadoes along with rain, hail, and high winds.
Now we are learning more about the storm and how many tornadoes dropped from the sky that evening thanks to the National Weather Service.
Tornadoes Were Observed in Several Counties on June 5
According to the National Weather Service, 8 total tornadoes were confirmed in the storm that made its way to Lubbock. Tornadoes were produced in Cochran, Hockley, and Lubbock Counties.
The tornado that touched down near Morton was the first of three EF-2 tornados last Thursday. It was on the ground for about 20 minutes and measured about a mile wide. Peak winds were at about 125 mph.
The widest tornado measured 1.1 miles long and was on the ground for 10 miles in Hockley County.
Two tornadoes touched down in Smyer and ended in Lubbock County. One tornado was an EF-1 tornado that injured two people, the other was an EF-2 tornado. The tornado at Reece Center was an EF-1 tornado that was on the ground for about 12 minutes.
West Lubbock Hit With Severe Downburst Winds and Hail
Wind speeds up to 115 mph hit portions of West Lubbock along with hail. Broken windows, skylights and additional tree damage was reported as far south as Wolfforth and as far east as Avenue Q.
