The Space Shuttle Discovery Could Return To Texas If Lawmakers Get Their Way
Could the Space Shuttle Discovery be heading back home? Texas Senators John Cornyn and Ted Cruz have introduced a bill that return the Space Shuttle to its home in Houston according to reports on Thursday.
According to Chron.com, both Cornyn and Cruz are blaming politics and favoritism as the main driver behind the space shuttle not being in Houston right now. Now the two have introduced legislation that would bring the shuttle to its rightful home.
Space Shuttle Discovery Was Supposed to go to Houston
Chron.com reports that Discovery was supposed to be on display at the Johnson Space Center. Four shuttles have been retired and the plan was for Discovery to go to Houston, but that never happened.
Instead of being in Houston, Discovery has been located in Virginia at the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum. Senators John Cornyn and Ted Cruz believe the shuttle snub was politically motivated.
"Houston played a critical role throughout the life of the space shuttle program, but it is clear political favors trumped common sense and fairness when the Obama administration blocked the Space City from receiving the recognition it deserves," Cornyn said in a statement. "I am proud to lead the effort the finally bring Discovery home to Houston, where future generation of Texans and Americans can come to learn about the city's integral role in our nation's space shuttle program."
Where in Houston Would the Space Shuttle Be Moved To?
According to Chron.com, Discovery would be moved from Virginia to the Space Center Houston Museum.
No word yet on when the Senate may vote on the legislation or how much support it has in Congress.
