Texas DPS Warns Texans Not To Travel To This Vacation Destination

When it comes to Spring Break, most Texans already have their plans locked in and they are ready to travel, if they haven't hit the road or the friendly skies already. But that isn't stopping the Texas Department of Public Safety from issuing a warning to Texans to stay away from one vacation destination.

According to a press release issued this weekend, The Texas Department of Public Safety is warning Texans not to travel to Mexico. That includes the resort areas like Cancun. The reason for the warning to Texans? Cartel violence and recent headlines about Americans being kidnapped or going missing in Mexico.

“Drug cartel violence and other criminal activity represent a significant safety threat to anyone who crosses into Mexico right now,” said DPS Director Steven McCraw. “We have a duty to inform the public about safety, travel risks and threats. Based on the volatile nature of cartel activity and the violence we are seeing there; we are urging individuals to avoid travel to Mexico at this time.”

The United States government has also issued recent travel warnings to Mexico. Travelers are encouraged to view the latest warnings online. Additionally, U.S. citizens who do decide to travel to Mexico are urged to register with the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate prior to their departure.

DPS understands many people do travel to Mexico without incident, but the serious risks cannot be ignored. All travelers are encouraged to carefully research any planned trips and, again, consider postponing or canceling travel to Mexico at this time.

Obviously, Mexico is a destination for many when it comes to Spring Break and during the summer vacation period. While many probably won't change their travel plans during Spring Break, this warning also includes any future travel as things aren't expected to get better in Mexico any time soon.

If you do travel to Mexico, be safe and know your surroundings. Try to stay in the tourist areas, and one tip we were told years ago, try not to stand out.
