Travel Columnist Surprised To Find Out There Are Fun Things To Do In Lubbock
If you have lived in Lubbock longer than a couple of years, you have no doubt heard the following said about Lubbock, "Lubbock is boring" and that "there is nothing to do in Lubbock". In fact, you've probably heard those things a lot like I have.
Most of the time those phrases are said by two groups, Younger people in Lubbock and adults who have never been to Lubbock or have only come in for a weekend for a Texas Tech Football game. At one time, I fell into one of those categories. When I moved to Lubbock in 2001, I eventually got to the point where I thought Lubbock was a boring town and I would move away after graduating from Texas Tech. I'm still here today.
Recently a writer with the Houston Chronicle wrote a piece and the headline amused me. "Surprisingly fun things to do in Lubbock, Texas".
It's a well done piece that highlights some of Lubbock's great wineries, restaurants, and cultural experiences. Of course one of those highlights is the Buddy Holly Hall of Performing Arts and Sciences.
Visitors should check the calendar at Buddy Holly Hall, West Texas' largest dedicated performance venue. The state-of-the-art facility, funded exclusively through private dollars, opened in 2021 and has welcomed crowds streaming into the 2,200-seat main theater eager to see a live performance ever since. Chances are there will be an opportunity to catch a live performance from the Lubbock Symphony Orchestra, Ballet Lubbock, touring theater productions or renowned artists.
I think the author hit many highlights, though they probably could have expanded the piece and wrote about Lubbock's close location to Caprock Canyons State Park and even Palo Duro. But hey, at least more and more people are finding out that Lubbock isn't some old dusty town. There are a lot of great things happening here.
