Kliff Kingsbury Brings Familiar Face to Arizona Cardinals

According to multiple reports, the Arizona Cardinals have signed Dylan Cantrell to a contract to work as both WR and TE in Kingsbury's spread attack in the new NFL.

Dylan Cantrell played with Patrick Mahomes at Whitehouse in high school before heading to Texas Tech a year earlier than his quarterback. Cantrell played in four seasons for the Red Raiders notching 158 receptions, nearly 2,000 yards and 18 touchdowns.

His six-foot three-inch frame allowed him to be a solid possession receiver in the Big 12 but if the plan is legitimate to try him at TE in the new offense he'll be undersized blocking inside the box. Though, in today's NFL more defenses spend more snaps in dime and nickel defenses providing Cantrell with a unique opportunity to be more of a wide-bodied slot receiver who is a TE in title only.

His athleticism was well documented at Texas Tech and was lauded for his blocking that allowed the screen game and rushing attack to flourish when Cantrell didn't have the ball in his hands.

Cantrell was drafted in the sixth round of the 2018 draft by the Los Angeles Chargers, but did not make the team out of training camp and was put on their practice squad where he battled to make the active roster but never appeared in a game. He was released prior to 2019 after dealing with various injuries. Even though he never made it into a game during his time with the Chargers, Cantrell was widely praised as being a stud in practice.
