Mike Leach Calls Newspaper Reporter a ‘Sanctimonious Troll’ After Losing Seventh Straight Apple Cup Game
There have been a few obstacles that Mike Leach has been unable to conquer while the head coach of Washington State. One of them is winning the Cougars' annual Apple Cup rivalry game against the Washington Huskies.
Friday, Washington beat Washington State 31-13 in Seattle. The loss ended Washington State's regular season with a (6-6) record, and marked the seventh straight Washington win in the Apple Cup.
After the game, Coach Leach got salty with John Blanchette from the The Spokesman-Review in Spokane.
Halfway through an answer about the Cougars loss, Leach directly addresses Blanchette and called him a "sanctimonious troll." You can see the complete video in the tweet below.
Hours after the postgame press conference video went public, two elected officials in Washington State sounded off about Leach's behavior, including Lt. Governor Cyrus Habib:
Following the 2019 season, Leach still has four years left on his contract, which pays him $4 million per year. No word on what Leach's buyout would be, but it's probably high enough to make the Washington State administration think twice before firing him. Unless the WSU administration tried to fire Leach 'for cause,' saying that his conduct voided the remaining money on his contract. If that happens, it then becomes a strange case of déjà vu. It was 10 years ago this December that Leach was fired 'for cause' from Texas Tech University.
Leach still has a lawsuit working through Texas state courts in which he's seeking $2.5 million he says Texas Tech unlawfully withheld from him when he was fired in 2009.
