Texans are getting ready to save a little money this weekend during the upcoming Sales Tax Holiday. Beginning August 7 and ending at midnight on Sunday, August 9, the annual Tax-Free Weekend will be in place. That means most clothing, footwear, school supplies, and backpacks (that cost less than $100) will be tax-free.

The Texas Comptroller's office reminds Texans to practice social distancing if getting out and shopping during the annual Tax-Free Weekend. And of course, don't forget your mask or face covering. Also remember that the Tax-Free Weekend applies not just to the big box stores, but also to local businesses as well that sell qualifying goods.

For those who may prefer really embrace social distancing and shop from home, there is good news for you. According to the Texas Comptroller's office, online orders along with orders made over the phone, custom orders, and orders made through the mail are also tax-free as long as they qualify.  Here is how that works:

  • the item is both delivered, and paid for, by the customer during the exemption; or
  • the customer orders and pays for the item, and the seller accepts the order during the exemption period for immediate shipment, even if delivery is made after the exemption period ends.

A seller accepts an order when the seller has acted to fill the order for immediate shipment.

An order is filled for immediate shipment regardless of whether the shipment is delayed due to a backlog of orders or because stock is currently unavailable to, or on back order by, the seller.

So what items qualify to be tax free this weekend? Most clothing items, shoes, and back to school supplies although backpacks must cost less than $100. To view the full list, visit the Texas Comptrollers office here.
