As we all know, events in 2020 have looked different -- if they happen at all. This is no different from what's now happening at Texas Tech University and other schools around the State of Texas.

On Wednesday (October 21st), Texas Tech University announced that December 2020 graduates will be offered an in-person commencement ceremony and a virtual commencement ceremony. In order to have social distancing, there will be multiple in-person ceremonies.

The in-person commencement ceremonies have been scheduled for December 11th and 12th and will include modifications so that social distancing guidelines can be enforced. Attendance will also be limited to graduates and a specific number of guests.

On December 19th, Texas Tech University will hold a virtual commencement ceremony. All December graduates, even those who participated in the in-person commencements, will be included in the virtual ceremony.

Texas Tech President Dr. Lawrence Schovanec said a lot of time was put into the decision for the December graduations:

“Commencement is a special moment in the academic careers of our students and their families, and we spent a considerable amount of time carefully planning a safe in-person option to allow our students the opportunity to participate in a traditional ceremony. After much consideration by various university offices and students, we have decided to hold two types of commencement ceremonies for our fall graduates – in-person and virtual.”

According to the press release from Texas Tech University, Texas Tech plans on holding in-person ceremonies for the May 2020 and August 2020 graduates sometime in 2021.
