A Gaines County Deputy is recovering at a Lubbock hospital after encountering a wanted criminal on Monday.

The incident began when the deputy responded to the report of a suspicious vehicle parked outside a home in Seminole at around 7:30 a.m.

The Texas Department of Public Safety says that when the deputy arrived at the home, he came into contact with a suspicious man inside a parked Toyota Camry.

When the deputy asked for identification, the man allegedly stabbed him in the chest and the deputy responded by firing at the suspect. Both men were wounded in the altercation.

KAMC News reports that the deputy was taken to the University Medical Center in Lubbock for non-life threatening injuries, while the suspect, now identified as 34-year-old Peter Alexander Bohning of Connecticut, was taken to the Seminole Memorial Hospital. He was later pronounce dead.

According to Nashville law enforcement, Bohning was wanted for murder after stabbing a couple in Nashville, Tennessee on Friday. It's reported that the couple, Donald & Leigh Ann Zirkle, were sitting on their porch when Bohning approached them and asked for directions.

The encounter turned deadly when Bohning stabbed both of them and stole their 2010 Toyota Camry, the same vehicle he was found in by the Gaines County Deputy. Donald Zirkle died from his injuries, and Leigh Zirkle was last reported in critical condition.
