The improbable mega-success of the world’s moistest superhero continues, as Aquaman passed $1 billion worldwide at the box office last weekend. James Wan’s DC movie has now made $287.8 million in the United States and $732.4 million overseas, for a total of $1.02 billion to date. It is the first movie in the entire DC Extended Universe to earn more than $1 billion. (Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice previously came the closest, with $873 million.)

To put it in further context, here’s the list of the top-grossing DC Comics movies ever from Box Office Mojo. This is for all DC movies, not just the DCEU. It’s now number two on the all-time list:

You are reading that right. Aquaman, a film about a man who hangs out with fish and Amber Heard, and sometimes throws tridents, has now earned more money than Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight. And probably within a matter of days or weeks it’ll be the biggest DC Comics movie ever.

Some other fun facts:

  • Aquaman has made almost $400 million more than Justice League, where he appeared with all the other DC heroes.
  • Aquaman has the highest percentage of its ticket sales coming from overseas among DCEU movies (71.8%) Domestically, Aquaman still hasn’t made as much money as Wonder Woman, Suicide Squad, or even Man of Steel.
  • The lowest grossing DC Comics movie ever is Jonah Hex. Aquaman has made roughly 100 times as much money as Jonah Hex.

So blare the conch shells. Let the whales let loose their siren, uh, whale song. Pay homage to the true undisputed king, not just of the seas, but of the entire DC Universe. It’s Aquaman! Who’da thunk it?
