On Wednesday, February 10th, Lubbock City Councilmember Latrelle Joy is set to present a proclamation honoring Medal of Honor recipient Air Force Lieutenant Colonel George Davis.

February 10th is the 69th anniversary of Lt. Colonel George Davis' aircraft being shot down over Korea as he led his outnumbered patrol into combat. His body was never recovered. Davis is one of only a few pilots who had the distinction of being an Ace (the shooting down of multiple enemy aircraft by one individual) in 2 different wars: WWII and the Korean War.

Lt. Colonel Davis was awarded the Medal of Honor for his bravery and military service. His Veterans Memorial is located in the City of Lubbock Cemetery.

Along with the honoring of Lt. Colonel Davis, Purple Heart recipients Sergeant 1st Class Javier Gutierrez of San Antonio and Sergeant 1st Class Antonio Rey Rodriguez of Las Cruces, New Mexico will be honored at the ceremony. Gutierrez and Rodriguez were killed in combat in Afghanistan back on February 9th, 2020.

The Military Order of the Purple Heart, Chapter 0900, the VFW Post 2466 and the Friends of the Monument of Courage will be hosting the event, which starts at 11 a.m. at the Monument of Courage in Huneke Park. The park is located at 82nd Street and Nashville Avenue in Lubbock.
